A new Google maps feature will allow drivers to select the trip with the lowest carbon emissions. Where journey times are similar, the app will also automatically default to the lowest emissions route.

The update launched in the US this month and will be rolled out in Europe early next year.

Google’s chief executive, Sundar Pichai, said the update could prevent an estimated 1 million tonnes of emissions every year, the equivalent of taking 200,000 cars off the road.

“Travelling by car is one of the more carbon-intensive choices people make on a daily basis. Starting in the US, and in Europe in 2022, Google Maps will let you choose the route with the lowest carbon emissions if it isn’t already the fastest one,” Sundar said.

In addition to reducing the impact of car trips, this feature allows users to see the emissions they generate and may encourage them to opt for active travel methods like walking or cycling where possible.

If it proves successful, the update should soon become available in other countries.
