The latest Australian Energy Market Operator (AEMO) report revealed that Australia reached a major milestone in its energy transition, with renewable sources providing nearly half of the electricity used in eastern Australia from October to December 2024.
Experts say this shift away from coal is a clear indicator that the era of coal power in Australia is coming to an end. Moreover, the increased role of solar energy and other renewable sources helped drive down the National Electricity Market’s (NEM) total emissions to a new record low in the quarter.
Solar energy set a new quarterly high, producing 18 per cent more than the same period the previous year. This growth in renewables has helped offset a decrease in coal-fired power, which was further impacted by reduced coal availability.
With power demand increasing during the hotter months, the variety in energy sources such as solar, wind and others has proven to be a crucial factor in ensuring a reliable energy supply. This milestone highlights the increasing importance of renewable energy in Australia's energy mix, as the country continues its transition to cleaner, more sustainable power sources.
"One in three Aussie households now have solar on their rooftops – making rooftop solar three times more common than the backyard pool,” Greg Bourne, Climate Councillor and energy expert said in a report.
"…These renewable sources are already powering 40 per cent of Australia's main electricity grid, and their role is only growing."
