The ACT Government has announced that all public events will be plastic-free from July 2022 when the second phase of the Plastic Reduction Act comes into effect.

Under the legislation, vendors are banned from supplying plastic straws, plastic takeaway containers and single-use plastic plates and bowls. The sale of plastic cutlery, stirrers and expanded polystyrene containers is also banned under the first phase of the legislation which came into effect in July of this year.

Instead of plastics, patrons will be provided with eco-friendly alternatives such as wooden cutlery and cardboard food containers. This is also a great opportunity to take your own reusable utensils and refuse single-use entirely.

The Royal Canberra Show, Australia Day in the Capital, National Folk Festival, Enlighten Festival, The Balloon Spectacular, Symphony in the Park, Canberra Day and Reconciliation Day are among the first events that will be required to phase out plastics.

“We know Canberrans want to take everyday action on climate change by cutting down their consumption of these harmful plastic. Progressively phasing out these products helps set a level playing field for industry and business, accelerating the shift to more sustainable alternatives,” Minister for Transport and City Services, Chris Steel, said.

Plastic straws may still be supplied to those with a disability or medical condition who need them at events.

The ACT government is currently seeking feedback from, industry, disability organisations and people with disabilities about the impact of the phase one bans and conditions under which plastic straws should be made available.
