Operating in the canals of Bangkok, Thailand, the team at TerraCycle Global Foundation have been working to address a significant contributor to ocean pollution by diverting and recycling waste from the waterways. When these canals are polluted with waste they flow directly to oceans, posing significant threats to marine life and the environment.
Ensuring none of the diverted litter goes unused, the New-Jersey based organisation collects and repurposes the materials into new and useful recycled items.
Implementing their world-class river waste prevention systems by working with local communities and governments, these efforts aim to collect waste before it reaches the ocean. Currently, wildlife-safe river traps in Thai canals recover waste directly from the water, with workers then meticulously sorting, separating, and recycling plastics.
“Our operations provide safe, stable employment for members of the local Lat Phrao community in Bangkok while creating cleaner and healthier environments for communities along the canal,” said James Scott, Executive Director of the foundation.
This successful waste removal marks the beginning of their broader commitment to reducing ocean pollution, with plans to replicate and scale successful canal clean-up models in other Southeast Asia regions. A material recovery centre will also be established as a central hub for waste management and educational programs.
These clean-up projects combined with community involvement, set an example for future projects, highlighting a commitment to environmental conservation and responsible waste management.
