The Albanese government has announced new protections for the waters around the Heard and McDonald islands, one of Australia’s most remote and wild areas. The marine park will be expanded by over 300,000 square kilometres, quadrupling its size. 

This expansion exceeds the global 30 per cent target by 2030 that the government agreed to two years ago.   

“This is not just a huge win for Australia; it’s a huge win for the world,” Minister for the Environment and Water Tanya Plibersek said in a press release.  

The decision follows extensive consultations with researchers, conservationists and the fishing industry, aiming to support the sustainable and well-established fishery in the region. It’s also an important step in preserving the rich marine life of the region, helping to ensure that these beautiful waters remain healthy for future generations. 

Located about 4,000 kilometres southwest of Perth, the Heard and McDonald islands are home to glaciers, wetlands and Australia’s only active volcanoes. These islands provide vital habitats for wildlife, including albatrosses and penguins. The new protections will help keep these species safe from mining and overfishing.  

The expansion has received generally positive feedback, with some scientists and environmental groups noting additional nearby areas that could benefit from protection. A coalition of 27 organisations, known as Save Our Marine Life, observing that certain important habitats for wildlife were not included in the sanctuary zones, suggesting opportunities for further conservation efforts for the health of marine life.  

As Australia aims for ambitious conservation goals, the recent global nature-positive summit in Sydney offered an opportunity for conservationists to discuss the need for more funding for environmental protection. Overall, the expansion marks a significant step toward protecting Australia’s rich marine life and ongoing dialogue can lead to even greater achievements in safeguarding our oceans.
