International Women’s Day (IWD) provides an annual opportunity to reflect on progress made towards gender equality, to call for change and to celebrate acts of courage by women who have played a critical role in the history of their countries and communities. The event also offers the chance to raise funds to support the rights of women and girls around the world.
This year’s IWD theme is Changing Climates: Equality today for a sustainable tomorrow – a theme that recognises the contribution of women and girls around the world who are working to change the climate of gender equality and build a sustainable future. Harnessing the skills and knowledge of women to conserve our natural resources and create a healthier, more sustainable planet, is central to achieving the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals.
As part of this theme, UN Women Australia will be hosting a number of fundraising events, drawing together experts from the field from a diverse range of backgrounds. This year, celebrated scientist, conservationist and human rights activist Dr. Jane Goodall will be interviewed by Director of The Wattle Fellowship at the University of Melbourne Linh Do for a virtual discussion on how women’s capabilities can be better utilised in addressing the climate crisis.
Physical events are also taking place in most Australian capital cities to show the interview as well as offer the chance for discussion with a dedicated host. Registration for all events can be found via the UN Women Australia website.
