Christmas time represents a challenge for even the most avid of greenies. But buying gifts without compromising your values doesn't have to be difficult. Do the planet (and your wallet) some good with these simple sustainable gift ideas:

1. Gift experiences instead of things

Experiences such as an adventure, workshop or class (think: woodworking, ceramics, repair workshops), dinner or a movie are fun, thoughtful and eco-friendly gifts. Experience-based presents can bring people together, create lasting memories and help your loved ones learn new skills!

2. Make instead of buying

You don't have to be a skilled artist or chef to create beautiful homemade presents. A simple jar of pickled vegetables or preserves makes for a thrifty, practical and tasty gift. If you do want to get crafty, why not try crocheting some coasters using scrap yarn or making a zero waste candle using an old jar and remnants of candles from around your home? (See our DIY candle Instagram story for detailed instructions.)

3. Regift items from your home that you no longer use

Are you hoarding an huge collection of books that you haven't opened in ten years or a set of china that's never left the cupboard? Christmas is the perfect time to take a look around your house for hidden gems that aren't getting the love they deserve and pass them on to a new owner. Selling these items through online marketplaces like Gumtree or Facebook Marketplace is also a great way to make a little extra cash over the Christmas break.

4. Buy secondhand

A recent Gumtree report found that 48% of Australians are becoming more concerned about the environmental impact of buying new. The wide variety of secondhand options available these days mean that it is easier than ever to support the reuse economy over the festive season. If you're taking the 'buy nothing new challenge' this Christmas, your local charity store, reuse centre, second-hand bookshop or flea market are great places to start. Online marketplaces will also allow you to filter your search by your location, reducing the carbon impacts of shipping gifts over long distances.

5. If buying new, support eco-friendly and ethical brands

If you can't realistically fit in craft projects or trips to Vinnies this Christmas, that is okay too. You can still gift sustainably by buying from eco-friendly and ethical brands. Websites like1 Million Women, Biome, Onya and Flora & Fauna have plenty of excellent options to choose from. Reusable items like KeepCups or tote bags also make great eco-friendly gifts.
