A guide to sustainable gifting this holiday season

Buying gifts for our loved ones is a cherished tradition during the festivities, but what is the environmental impact? Here we share some simple approaches to giving more meaningfully and sustainably this year.

Christmas is a joyful season that encourages us to give. However, it also brings an increase in waste generated from presents, including packaging, single use wrapping and unwanted gifts. Often times, much of what we buy for others ends up in the back of a cupboard or even in landfill.

According to a recent poll by the Australia Institute, Aussies waste more than $1 billion on Christmas gifts that don’t get used, a figure higher than the estimated $921 million spent on unused gifts in 2023 alone. It was also revealed that three in four Australians (77 per cent) enjoy buying gifts for people during Christmas, but over half of Australians (52 per cent) would prefer it if people did not buy them gifts.

The solution here is to shift towards more mindful and intentional gifting that is more sustainable and brings lasting value. Below are some tips as we think about what to give this season.

Give based on wishlists

While it’s exciting to see the joy and surprise on your loved ones' faces when opening an unexpected gift, giving something they truly want or need can be even more meaningful. Don’t hesitate to ask your friends or family what is on their wishlist or what they would like to receive – they will generally appreciate you getting their input rather than getting something they don’t like!

This approach makes gifting easier, removing all the guesswork and helping avoid unwanted gifts which can end up discarded or unused.

Choose experience gifts

Gifts don’t always have to be material items; experiences can be just as special, if not more. Depending on the receiver’s personal interests or hobbies, you could treat them to a wellness package, tickets to a musical show or a cooking class. These can either be for them to enjoy alone or you can make it even more special by joining them.

Experience gifts are not only a great low-waste option, they also provide the gift of a memory that lasts forever.

Donate to your charity of choice

In the spirit of the holiday season, consider donating, volunteering or buying meaningful gifts that go towards supporting a charity or cause. There are countless of communities and charities that could use your support this time of the year.

Planet Ark’s Seedling Bank plays a crucial role in restoring biodiversity, supporting native wildlife and building resilience against climate change. Donating to The Seedling Bank helps provide funding for native seedlings for community tree planting events to extend the impact of National Tree Day. Consider gifting a tree somewhere it is needed to a loved one by donating to The Seedling Bank.

Don’t hesitate to regift

Sometimes we receive gifts that aren’t to our liking but could be appreciated by someone else. Regifting can be a thoughtful way to pass along something that will bring joy to another person, while also ensuring the item does not go to waste.

There might be potential awkwardness around regifting, so it can be a good idea to check with the original giver (if you know them well) and politely let them know that you plan to regift it while also expressing your thanks.

Give handmade gifts

There are plenty of tutorials available online for creating handmade gifts for the festive season, such as baking holiday treats, making DIY cards and crafting custom gifts. If you’re a crafty person, it’s a great opportunity to put your skills and talents to use or even challenge yourself to create something for the first time. Your loved ones will appreciate the thought and effort behind these gifts and it can be far more meaningful than simply picking something off the shelf at a store.

If you’re not particularly crafty or don’t have the time to make something yourself, you can still support local artisans and small businesses that offer handmade products. Either way, you’ll be gifting your loved ones something unique and special.
