Independent not-for-profit GECA has introduced a national Waste Collection Services Standard aiming to improve the accuracy and transparency of waste collection data.

Developed in collaboration with the Better Buildings Partnership (BBP) and the National Australian Built Environment Rating System (NABERS), the new standard sets a sustainability benchmark to reward waste companies implementing best practices. The standard will encourage better sustainability performance while also supporting service providers’ efforts to minimise their impacts on the environment.

For the waste industry, it provides the opportunity for companies to display their environmental credentials in terms of transparency, quality service, accuracy of data for reporting and credibility. This should not only increase the potential for new client leads, but also strengthen the trust relationship with existing clients.

“We're so excited that our new standard means that government and private sectors across Australia now have the opportunity to choose certified waste collection,” GECA CEO Kate Harris said in a statement.

“This in turn rewards those doing the right thing, driving good data, cutting contamination and ensuring recycling gets to the right place.”
