Australia Post will be rolling out a new fleet of electric trikes in the coming months in an effort to adapt to changing postal conditions and reduce their environmental impact.

The new electronic delivery vehicles are part of the company’s environmental action plan released last year, which outlines how Australia Post will achieve its target of a 25 per cent reduction in greenhouse gases by 2020. 

The battery powered trikes are designed and manufactured by Swiss company Kyburz and can carry up to three times more letters and parcels than the standard motorbike used in the past. This is significant as Australia Post estimates the volume of parcels has grown 10 per cent per year as online shopping has grown in popularity.

The first wave of the new fleet is currently being trialled in Rockhampton, central Queensland. Electric delivery vans are also being investigated as part of ongoing efforts to cut transport emissions.

Australia Post has also recently installed solar panels at 49 sites across Australia. The company says these solar systems will dramatically reduce grid electricity consumption and save 4,635 tonnes of carbon each year.

“We are seeing immediate returns as we unlock renewable energy at some of our busiest sites”, Australia Post CFO Janelle Hopkins told Renew Economy.

“Our first ever Environmental Action Plan is a step towards continuing to reduce carbon emissions and achieve our target of a 25 per cent reduction by 2020.”
