The greatest female minds in climate change will descend on Sydney after the city council won its bid to host a global conference in 2020.

The C40 group, representing 94 cities home to more than 700 million people, has selected Sydney to host its Women4Climate Conference in April 2020. The conference aims to empower young female leaders from around the world to take action to protect the environment, with a focus on mentoring, research and technology.

Women have been shown by numerous studies to be disproportionately impacted by climate change, with the UN finding that 80 percent of people displaced by climate change are women. Reasons for this disparity include lower socioeconomic power, higher likelihood of experiencing poverty and their traditional roles as primary caregivers and providers of food and fuel. 

Despite being disproportionately affected by climate change, women are also highly underrepresented at the leadership level in climate change matters. In 2015 the UN Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) observed that “women are not represented equally in the key climate-change related sectors of science” and are “underrepresented in policy-making and programming”.

Enhancing women’s participation and leadership in climate change matters will be critical to securing are sustainable future for all people. City of Sydney Lord Mayor Clover Moore, chief executive Monica Barone and chief of staff Shehana Teixeira will travel to Paris later this month to attend this year’s Women4Climate Summit.
