Over 25 female energy entrepreneurs convened in Nairobi, Kenya from the 4th to the 13th of April for a microgrid training workshop.
The event was backed by the UN Environment Renewable Energy Solutions for Africa (RES4Africa) and focused on “[strengthening] technical and business skills of African women entrepreneurs in the energy sector,” according to a UN Environment press release.
The women were given hands on training with 20-40 kW microgrids and familiarized with how to create and run their own, improving on the skills needed to implement microgrids of their own across Africa.
Much of Africa doesn’t have access to consistent electric sources. In fact, according to RES4Africa, only 23% of the population in East Africa have access to electricity at all.
The workshop also encouraged gender equality by working with women, which allows more women in the area to have more opportunities.
