South Australia declared a world leader in variable solar/wind energy

By Josh Cole  March 1st, 2018

New research has found that South Australia is one of nine leading regions in the fields of solar and wind power generation.

South Australia’s efforts to adopt a more sustainable, diverse energy grid have earned attention from around the world. The state secured the world’s largest battery from Tesla to back up its Hornsdale wind farm, and has since invested in an array of solar projects including contributing $1.95m to a $13.9m project by Planet Ark Power and Schneider Electric. Now research from the Institute for Energy Economics and Financial Analysis (IEEFA) has identified South Australia as one of nine regions that prove solar and wind can supply power without adversely affecting energy grids, alongside Denmark, Uruguay, Germany, Ireland, Spain, Texas, California, and the Indian state of Tamil Nadu. IEEFA identified South Australia’s investment in battery storage and rapid response to statewide blackouts in 2017 as examples of why it’s a world leader.

It seems like South Australia, which gets 48% of its energy from variable renewables, could be an example overseas as well as at home.
