SAVE - How to take action this Earth Day

We’re celebrating 50 years of Earth Day! Even though we may be physically apart this year, we still face the climate change challenge together, and together we can SAVE the Earth through positive action.

We’re celebrating 50 years of Earth Day! Even though we may be physically apart this year, we still face the climate change challenge together, and together we can SAVE the Earth through positive action.

Speak up

That might mean writing a letter to your local member, but it can also mean chatting with family, friends and housemates about sustainable actions they can take such as tips to recycle right, carrying reusables, starting a compost or planting trees!

And remember, though we are currently physically distanced from one another, we remain connected digitally and having the same collective experience. Speak up about environmental issues you’re passionate about, what you’ve learnt recently, or share what you’re doing today from where you are. Add your voice to this global demand for action with the shared hashtag #EarthDay2020.

Act

That could mean doing something big, like installing solar panels or buying nothing new for a month (or year!). Or it could be in the small actions we take, like consuming mindfully. This means considering whether we really need something before buying it, and when we do shop, choosing eco-friendly products and reducing waste, buying second hand, or joining the share economy.

We can also take action by simply planting a tree. This is no small feat either, especially if it grows into a giant! This is one way to contribute to the Earth, your community and your own well-being.

You can also be a part of climate action through Earth Hour itself: “Every hour, on the hour, we’ll have a new, powerful way for you to demand action and drive change” - Visit the Earth Hour website or social media for more info.

Vote

There's more ways to vote than in elections. We can vote with our time and attention, supporting and following organisations digitally who spread the sustainable message.

We can vote with our pocket every time we grab our groceries. For many during this time, it’s all about survival, and that’s okay. But if you’re in a position to do so, opt for items made from recycled materials, items that can be reused and recycled, and local, Aussie made brands.

Educate

The world’s first Earth Day in 1970 seized the power of education through campus-wide teach-ins to spark conversation, engage local communities and create change. All of us, young and old, can choose to keep learning and growing on our sustainable journey.

We have a host of information, resources and tips on our websites and social media. We’re here to help you live a low-waste life, connect with nature and take all sorts of positive environmental actions. The more you know and practice, the more you can help those around you do the same.

Visit our RecyclingNearYou and National Tree Day websites for educational resources.
