A reusable takeaway food container scheme that reduces packaging is kicking goals in the sustainability space, taking home multiple awards this year.

The container is called retub and in combination with its built-in container exchange program called Reswap, it’s helping busy people enjoy tasty meals on the go without creating waste. The idea came to office worker Veronica Shannon when she noticed the consistently full waste baskets under everyone’s desk in her office.

Veronica began to look into ways of addressing this such as bringing one’s own reusable container, but often these containers were rejected by vendors for fear that they might be unclean or contaminated. In order for such an activity to be successful, it would require the complete confidence of both the vendor and customer that containers were clean and wouldn’t pose a threat to health.

Thus, retub was born as both a product and a service. As a product, retub is a premium, reusable takeaway food container featuring a thermal outer base to retain heat for longer whilst protecting fingers from burning, a vent that doubles as a food scoop for when you have forgotten your cutlery, measurement lines so both you and your cafe know how much food is within and an inner container that can be easily removed for ease of washing.

But that’s not all, as retub comes with a built-in container exchange program called Reswap. Through this service, participating businesses receive stock of retub inner containers so that when a retub owner comes in with an unclean retub, the business can simply swap the inner container with a clean one. This saves time for the participating business whilst also ensuring they can guarantee the container is cleaned to their standards.

People have begun to take notice of the scheme and its potential to truly shake up the takeaway industry. In recent months, retub has won a Good Design Award 2019 for design excellence as well as being finalists for the 2019 Premier’s Sustainability Award.
