In a great example of the circular economy in action, Nespresso has launched a series of limited-edition pens made from recycled aluminium sourced from used coffee pods.

Nespresso partnered with Swiss writing and drawing instruments company, Caran d’Ache, to create the classic ballpoint pen, which provides an excellent reminder of the infinite durability of aluminium. The pen demonstrates how up-cycling can result in the creation of beautiful design objects, giving new value to what was once considered waste.

Loïc Réthoré, General Manager of Nespresso Australia and Oceania, said: “We’re delighted to be partnering once again with Caran d’Ache to bring our customers this unique accessory, a true celebration of the infinite recyclability of aluminium and the value of this commodity in the circular economy. 

Nespresso has invested in pioneering, establishing and scaling its own dedicated recycling system for used aluminium capsules – the first of its kind in Australia. Initially launched in 2010, the ongoing investment into this system ensures customers can conveniently recycle their used Nespresso capsules, regardless of how remotely they live.

There are now four ways Nespresso customers can choose to recycle their used capsules. These include participating in a bulk recycling collection initiative where businesses and community locations can choose to become a collection point, returning used aluminium capsules to a Nespresso Boutique, dropping them off at a participating florist collection point, or posting used capsules back to Nespresso using a special Australia Post satchel.
