Australia sends over 20 million tonnes of waste to hundreds of landfill sites around the country every year. Much of this garbage is composed of single-use items like plastic bags, plastic water bottles, disposable coffee cups and plastic straws. That’s pretty unforgiveable when there are so many readily available alternatives for these problem items.

This zero waste kit, inspired by Planet Ark ambassador and author of A Zero Waste Life Anita Vandyke, consists of the absolute essentials to reducing waste in the course of everyday life. They all fit easily into a handbag or fabric bag so there’s no excuse not to bring them everywhere you go. An excellent gift for family members, that one friend who means well but doesn’t know how to start reducing the waste they produce or even yourself!

What’s in the kit?

  1. Reusable drink bottle
  2. Reusable coffee cup
  3. Stainless steel or bamboo reusable straw
  4. Fold-up tote bag

With these four items alone it’s incredible how much you can reduce the amount of waste you produce. But it’s not just about using the items, but also remembering them!

Handy tips for remembering the kit

  1. Keep it with your shoes. If you’re a fashionista who changes their handbags frequently, storing your zero waste kit with your shoes is the best way to remember it before heading out for the day.
  2. Keep it in the car. If you drive regularly for work or leisure keeping the kit in your car ensures that you won’t forget it. An alternative if you have multiple people using the car is to keep your car keys inside the kit!
  3. Make it part of your mental checklist. Almost everyone has those necessities they check for before leaving home. Make the kit part of your checklist. Phone, keys, wallet… zero waste kit!

There’s plenty of other items you could add to the kit depending on who the gift is going to. Have a friend that eats takeaway a lot? Include some reusable cutlery and food containers to reduce the waste generated. Family member who regularly goes to bulk food stores? Pop a couple of glass jars in to store their nuts, grains and spices. Planet Ark ambassador and waste warrior Anita Vandyke has plenty of helpful tips and tricks on her zero waste blog.

The possibilities are endless, so why not make your own zero waste kit today?
