Planet Ark has partnered with Gumtree to educate Australians on the importance of sustainable consumer practices and encourage participation in Australia’s growing ‘circular economy’ – where materials are kept in use at their highest value for as long as possible.
At its core, our partnership revolves around a mutual agreement that when we share more, we waste less. The Gumtree community marketplace allows this to happen.
Together, we hope to support a thriving national circular economy, educate Australians on the benefits it brings and drive the adoption of sustainable consumer practices. The alliance combines Planet Ark’s sustainability expertise with Gumtree’s position as Australia’s favourite online marketplace, providing the perfect platform to educate Australians on the environmental and financial benefits of trading within the circular economy.
For more than 14 years, Gumtree has empowered Australians to reduce their impact on the planet by providing a platform to make environmentally conscious purchasing decisions and responsibly dispose of pre-loved and unwanted belongings. With more than 2.8 million live listings and seven million users each month, Gumtree helps Australians divert millions of items from landfill every year.
As part of the partnership, Planet Ark will also work with Gumtree to ensure the organisation is operating in the most sustainable manner possible.
Gumtree is as a sponsor of the ‘Reuse Hub’ on Planet Ark’s Recycling Near You – Australia’s most comprehensive recycling information service. The sponsorship will help drive consumer education on the environmental benefits of reusing and repairing goods, ensuring Australians understand the many benefits of keeping items in use before seeking recycling options.
Gumtree came on board in 2021 as a Major Sponsor of Planet Ark’s National Recycling Week. A key focus of the program in 2021 will be the role every Australian plays in keeping materials in use and out of landfill, including using online community marketplaces to reduce their impact on the environment.
Gumtree is also a sponsor of the 2021 Schools Recycle Right Challenge, which engages hundreds of thousands of students across the country in recycling education every year. With the support of Planet Ark, Gumtree this year released "Ollie and the Spectral Spectacles", a digital book that inspires children to rethink the way we understand our resources and encourages them to reduce and reuse to help them make their community and environment more sustainable. The digibook is part of Gumtree's efforts to support students and schools around Australia and is paired with a lesson plan as part of the Schools Recycle Right Challenge.
