Green Resolutions

Week 35: I resolve to use more natural cleaning methods to reduce the amount of synthetic chemicals to which both the environment and I are exposed.

Date: 01-Sep-09

Spring is here and it’s time to shoo out winter and welcome in the warmer months. However, as I embark on my spring cleaning, I should take a moment to consider just what I’m spreading around my home. Many store bought cleaners contain chemicals like ammonia, phosphorus, naphthalene, chlorine, phenol and other petrochemicals – which are all harmful to human health and the environment.

Luckily, making my own natural cleaning products at home is easy! I can achieve amazing things with a mix of bicarb soda, lemon juice, vinegar and essential oils. I can get started by downloading a free, comprehensive natural cleaning guide with instructions and recipes, courtesy of the NSW DECCW (link to attachment)  I can also check out the following books: Greeniology (Tanya Ha), Chemical Free Home (Robin Stewart), Safer Cleaning and Better Living Tips (Zoe James), Green Cleaner (Barbara Lord).

If I find I do need to buy a cleaning solution at the supermarket, I will look for products with non-toxic, plant-based ingredients, like Orange Power: www.orangepower.com.au. I can also buy eco-friendly cleaning solutions from online stores like www.planetarkdirect.com, www.biome.com.au, www.todae.com.au and www.neco.com.au.

Commitment Statement

I resolve to use more natural cleaning methods to reduce the amount of synthetic chemicals to which both the environment and I are exposed.
