Green Resolutions

Week 32: I resolve to investigate options for reducing the impact of my car on the environment, to reduce my greenhouse gas emissions.

Date: 11-Aug-09

Car travel accounts for 11% of the average Australian’s greenhouse gas emissions.  Reducing the emissions from my car is a great way to reduce the ecological footprint of my lifestyle.

If I’m looking for a new car, I can consider a hybrid vehicle like the Toyota Prius or check out www.greenvehicleguide.gov.au for the environmental credentials of all the leading brands.

If I use my car occasionally, I can consider selling it and joining a local car share club like www.goget.com.au or www.flexicar.com.au. That way I will only pay for the car when I need it and will save on registration, insurance and maintenance.

If I want to keep the car I have, I can green it up by converting it to LPG or using bio-fuel. The Australian Government is currently offering a rebate for vehicle conversion to an LPG system. I can visit www.ausindustry.gov.au and follow the ‘Energy and Fuels’ then ‘LPG Vehicle Scheme’ links to find out more. For  more information on converting my car to LPG or bio-fuel, I can visit www.lpgautogas.com.au  or www.biofuelsassociation.com.au.

Commitment Statement

I resolve to investigate options for reducing the impact of my car on the environment, to reduce my greenhouse gas emissions.
