Australians Throw Away One Million Dollars A Day!
Australians spend approximately $400 million each year on batteries. That’s about $50 per household. The vast majority of batteries sold are single use or throwaway batteries – almost 90%.
That means Australians throw away almost $1 million worth of disposable batteries every day!
But, it doesn’t have to be this way. A simple switch to rechargeable batteries will not only massively reduce this waste but also save Australians money in a relatively short period of time depending on usage levels.
Another benefit highlighted by Australia’s CSIRO is the savings in greenhouse gas emissions with their estimated savings of 100kg of Carbon Dioxide equivalent saved for each rechargeable used.
To help the environment even more, Varta will donate 20% of the purchase price on any Varta Rechargeable Battery Product to Planet Ark Environmental Foundation between the 15th of March and the 9th of April 2010. Participating retailers include Coles, Woolworths, Big W and Dick Smith.
