Lets do (school) lunch
Reusable lunchboxes & drink bottles
Plastic and insulated lunchboxes are easy to find and their use reduces waste. Even better are compartmentalised lunchboxes. These little beauties come with their own compartments so kids still get the thrill of lots of little items but without the packaging - and you don't have to scrounge around for multiple plastic containers with matching lids.
You could also try a Japanese bento lunch box, which is used by Japanese school children.
Cling-wrap free zone!
Banish cling-wrap from your life with reusable sandwich wraps. These can be found at 4myearth.com.au
If you send food to school in paper bags or ziplock plastic bags - ask for them to be brought home so they can be recycled or reused. The same applies to juice or UHT milk containers - make sure the container is recyclable when you buy them.
Bulk is best
As a general rule, buying bulk or larger packets and then making your own smaller version reduces packaging waste. Food ideas where this works well include:
- Cheese and crackers
- Pre-cut fruit
- Dried fruit
- Pre-popped popcorn
- Boiled eggs
- Dried cereal or snack mix
