May is the month for International Composting Awareness Week (ICAW) - and there's more to fruit, vegetable and plant scraps than you might think!

According to ICAW Australia - About Composting, approximately 60% of the rubbish Aussies put in the everyday mixed-waste 'garbage bin' could be put to better use in the garden as compost and mulch or could be returned to agricultural land to improve soil quality.

Composting has so many benefits. It can:

  • Improve soil quality and garden vitality by releasing the rich nutrients in the compost into your soil,
  • Recycle valuable nutrients and reduce the use of artificial fertilisers,
  • Reduce the amount of organic waste going to landfill and the related greenhouse gas emissions,
  • Improve water savings and
  • Save you money.

Check out Planet Ark's ambassador Costa Georgiadis in this short tutorial which tells you everything you need to know about composts and worm farms for the home!

Clean Up Australia also has a handy step-by-step guide to composting which you can find here.

Give it a go, and share your ideas, stories and pics on the National Tree Day Facebook page. We'd love to hear about your composting adventures!
