World Environment Day (WED) is the biggest and most widely celebrated global day for positive environmental action. Since it began in 1972, it has become one of the main vehicles through which the UN stimulates worldwide awareness of the environment and encourages political attention and action.

WED is also a day for people from all walks of life to come together to ensure a cleaner, greener and brighter world for themselves and future generations.

Forests: Nature At Your Service

This year’s WED is focused on the sustainable management of forests. Forests cover one third of the earth’s landmass, performing vital functions which make our planet alive with possibilities. Often referred to as ‘the lungs of the earth’, forests are vital to the survival of people everywhere - all seven billion of us. But still, global deforestation continues at an alarming rate. Every year, 13 million hectares of forest are destroyed.

WED chose this year’s theme, ‘Forests: Nature at Your Service’, to encourage forest conservation and sustainable consumption, and in support of the UN International Year of Forests initiative.

Planet Ark has recently launched an exciting new campaign addressing this very issue! More information about this campaign will be coming soon.
