Composting your food scraps or garden cuttings has huge environmental benefits! Composting diverts organic resources from landfill where they would decompose under anaerobic conditions to produce methane, a greenhouse gas that is 25 times more powerful than carbon dioxide.

Composting also enables the retention and reuse of valuable nutrients and organic material, which can do so much to improve the fertility and water-holding capacity of our soils.

The best thing about composting is that it’s so easy, as long as you understand a few basic principles. That’s why Costa Georgiadis has teamed up with Planet Ark to talk us through some composting and worm farming basics in this short video tutorial.

Costa has been sharing his extensive knowledge of sustainable gardening and landscaping for years. He’s been the host of Costa’s Gardening Odyssey and Costa’s Arnhem Land Odyssey on SBS, and supported many local sustainability initiatives including Planet Ark’s National Tree Day.

After you've seen the video, be sure to check out our factsheets on recycling your food scraps and garden cuttings. You might also want to check out what’s happening with International Composting Awareness Week, 1- 7 May 2011.

Happy composting!
